The Ministry of Education has revealed a significant teacher shortage in Sri Lanka, with nearly 30,000 vacancies reported across the country. The shortage spans all subjects, including critical areas like English, Science, and Mathematics.
Ministry Secretary Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa confirmed the alarming figures, emphasizing that the lack of teachers is affecting schools islandwide. This shortage has not only impacted students’ education but also disrupted the teacher transfer process.
Ceylon Teachers Union General Secretary Mr. Joseph Stallingen highlighted the cascading effects of the crisis. “Without successors to fill the vacant positions, teachers are unable to get their much-needed transfers,” he stated. Consequently, many teachers are compelled to remain in their current posts indefinitely, awaiting the recruitment of new educators.
The issue has raised concerns about the future of education in Sri Lanka, with stakeholders urging immediate action to address the shortage and ensure the smooth functioning of schools.
