The National Institute of Education (NIE) in Maharagama, Sri Lanka, has announced the appointment of Prof. Manjula Vithanapathirana as its new Director General. Prof. Vithanapathirana, a seasoned academic with over 35 years of experience, brings a wealth of expertise and a strong vision for advancing Sri Lanka’s education system.

A Distinguished Career in Education

Prof. Vithanapathirana’s illustrious academic journey includes a BSc in Zoology, a Master of Education, a Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies, and a PhD in Education from University College London. She has served as the Chair Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Colombo and held numerous leadership roles in the education sector. Her extensive background in educational psychology and research positions her as an ideal leader to drive innovative reforms.

Driving Educational Reform

As the Director General, Prof. Vithanapathirana will spearhead initiatives to modernize teacher education and enhance learning methodologies across Sri Lanka. Her leadership will be instrumental in implementing the NIE’s 2022-2026 Strategic Management Plan, which prioritizes blended learning, digital literacy, and a shift toward learner-centered approaches.
