Pension Age Extended to 63 for Medical Professionals

The Government of Sri Lanka has announced a significant amendment to the Pension Minutes through a Gazette Extraordinary dated December 20, 2024. This revision affects the compulsory retirement age for specific categories of medical professionals, bringing much-needed clarity and extension to their service tenure.

Key Changes in the Amendment:

  1. The amendment renumbers Section 17 as Section 17(1) under the relevant Minutes on Pensions.
  2. The previous provision mandating a general age limit for compulsory retirement has been repealed.
  3. A new subsection has been added under Section 17(1), explicitly stating that the compulsory retirement age for Medical Specialists, Grade Medical Officers, Dental Officers, officers in Medical Administrative Grades, and Registered Medical Practitioners has been extended to 63 years.

This amendment overrides the existing general retirement age provisions under Section 17.

Effective Date:

The amended provisions are retroactively applicable from January 1, 2023, ensuring alignment with ongoing practices and regulations.
