The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka has opened applications for the admission of students with foreign qualifications to undergraduate courses for the academic year 2023/2024. This initiative allows both foreign nationals and Sri Lankans who have studied abroad to pursue higher education in one of Sri Lanka’s recognized universities.
Eligibility Criteria
Students with foreign qualifications equivalent to Sri Lanka’s G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination can apply. Candidates must provide proof of their qualifications, such as certification from the relevant Examination Board. Both Sri Lankan and foreign passport holders are eligible, but Sri Lankan candidates must have studied abroad for at least three years immediately before taking their qualifying exams. Additionally, the UGC has outlined specific documentation requirements, including proof of residence and study period abroad, as well as parental employment records if applicable.
Available Courses and Universities
The UGC has listed a wide range of courses across various fields including Medicine, Engineering, Arts, Management, Biological Sciences, and more. These courses are offered by multiple universities, such as the University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, and University of Sri Jayewardenepura, among others. Each course has a specific duration, ranging from three to six years depending on the field of study.
Application Process and Fees
Applicants must submit their applications along with the required documentation to the Deputy Secretary of University Admissions at the UGC. There is a processing fee of USD 100, which must be paid via bank transfer or bank draft. The deadline for application submission is October 9, 2024. Incomplete applications or those missing the processing fee will not be considered.
Selection and Admission
The UGC has reserved a limited number of places for foreign students, comprising up to 0.5% of the total intake per course of study. Selection priority is given to children of Sri Lankan diplomats stationed abroad, children of foreign diplomats in Sri Lanka, applicants from SAARC countries, Sri Lankan applicants, and other foreign applicants, respectively.
Fees and Financial Assistance
Students selected under this provision will be required to pay tuition and examination fees in US dollars. Fees vary by course, with medical and dental sciences costing up to USD 12,500 annually, while courses in humanities and social sciences are priced at USD 3,000 annually. No scholarships or financial assistance will be provided by the Sri Lankan government under this scheme.
